A Victorian tailcoat is one of the most striking choices a groom can make. It is formal and romantic, and it photographs wonderfully. Here is how to choose one that suits you, your venue and the season.
Start with the setting
- Castles, manor houses and historic venues: lean into the period with rich colours, brocade waistcoats and a longer frock-coat cut.
- Gothic or evening weddings: black, burgundy and deep purple, with velvet or jacquard textures.
- Garden and summer weddings: ivory, cream, taupe or light grey in lighter fabrics.
Choosing the colour
Black is the most formal and pairs with any wedding palette. Navy is softer in daylight. Emerald and burgundy are bold, romantic choices that look superb against an ivory gown. Ivory is a striking option for summer, especially paired with contrasting lapels.
The waistcoat ties it together
Your waistcoat is the easiest place to bring in your wedding colours. A brocade or embroidered waistcoat adds a period feel; a plain ivory or champagne waistcoat keeps the look clean. Double-breasted waistcoats add a touch of grandeur.
Fabric and season
Wool and wool blends are comfortable through most of the year. Velvet is luxurious for autumn and winter weddings but warm in summer. Jacquard and brocade bring texture that catches the light in photographs.
Groomsmen and page boys
A popular approach is to dress the groom in a distinctive colour and the groomsmen in black or navy with matching waistcoats. Our kids’ formal collection includes miniature tailcoat suits for page boys and ring bearers.
